Quick answer: no bag makes poop stop smelling. What keeps the smell away from you is a bag that does not leak or tear, a tight knot tied close to the load with the air squeezed out, and getting it into a lidded outdoor bin quickly. Scented bags add perfume on top of the problem. They do not fix a loose knot.
Where the smell actually comes from
When a used bag smells, the smell is getting out somewhere. There are only a handful of places it can come from, and each one has a different fix.

Notice what is not on that list: the bag's fragrance. That is the one thing marketing talks about most, and it touches none of the actual leaks.
Scented or unscented?
Our bags are unscented, and we will be honest about why. A scented bag is a bag with perfume in it. If the knot is loose, you get perfume and poop, which some people find worse than poop alone. If the knot is tight, the perfume is not doing much.
Some people love a scented bag, and that is fine. If that is you, we are not your bag. Some brands also sell bags marketed as odor-blocking. We do not make that claim. What we make is an extra thick, leak-proof bag that is 14 inches long, which is the part that helps you tie a proper knot.
The knot does most of the work
Here is the method, and it takes about four seconds:
- Put your hand in the bag like a glove, pick up, then peel the bag back over your hand so it turns inside out around the load.
- Hold the bag just above the load and squeeze the air up and out through the open top.
- Twist the neck a few times, close to the load.
- Tie a knot as low as you can, then a second one.
This is where length matters. Most bags are about 13 inches long, and ours are 14. That inch goes straight into the knot, which means you can tie it low and tight without your fingers getting close to the contents.
The City of San Diego's instruction is short for a reason: "Seal dog or cat poop in a plastic bag and throw it in the trash." Sealed is the key word.
Where the bag goes next
Best: the first outdoor bin you pass. In New York City, the Sanitation Department allows a tied bag of dog waste in a public litter basket. Check your city's rules.
Fine: your outdoor trash can, with the lid closed. If trash day is several days away and it is hot, drop the tied bag into a second bag first.

When the problem is the poop, not the bag
If your dog's poop suddenly smells far worse than usual, a bag will not solve it, and you should not want it to. A food change is a common culprit, since the AKC notes that switching food abruptly can cause gastrointestinal upset.
