Week one poop is often weird
New home, new routine, and often new food. That last one is the big one. The AKC notes that switching food abruptly can cause gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and a decreased appetite, and recommends making any change over 5 to 7 days.
So ask the shelter, rescue or breeder exactly what your dog has been eating, and bring some home. If you want to change it, mix gradually. Your carpet will thank you.
Know when it stops being a settling-in issue. VCA Animal Hospitals says a dog with severe, bloody diarrhea or other signs of illness needs medical attention as soon as possible, and that liquid or semi-liquid stools lasting more than two days mean a call to your vet. For puppies, VCA says to go to the vet right away if the puppy "is lethargic, refusing food, vomiting or has blood in their stool."
The first vet visit: bring a sample
Your vet may ask for a stool sample at the first visit, so ask when you book. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that "puppies should have several fecal parasite exams during their first year of life."
Here is how to do it properly, per VCA's guide to fecal tests:
- Size: about one inch, as clean as possible of grass and gravel.
- Container: clean and dry with a tight closure, such as a jar or a resealable plastic bag.
- Timing: collected within six hours of your visit, or 24 hours if refrigerated.
Use a poop bag as a glove to pick it up, then transfer it to the container. A tied poop bag is great for the trash, but it is not the sealed container your vet is asking for. Label it, and warn everyone in the house about what is in the fridge.
Know the rules before the first walk
Two local rules affect you immediately. The first is licensing. In New York City, for example, the Health Code says a dog in a public place must wear a collar with a currently valid metal license tag (Section 161.04). Your city or county will have its own version.

Learn what normal looks like
