Quick answer: a professional dog walker should buy by cost per bag, not box price. At walker volume, the gap between 33 cents and about 10 cents a bag is real money every month. Carry more bags than dogs on every walk, because in places like New York City, the pickup is legally your job, not just the owner's.

The law follows the leash

Walkers sometimes assume the fine lands on the owner. Read the rules and it often lands on whoever is holding the leash. New York City's Health Code applies to "a person who owns, possesses or controls a dog" (Section 161.03), and the Department of Sanitation says plainly that "dog owners and dog walkers are responsible for cleaning up dog waste in all public areas," with fines of up to $250.

Seattle goes further. Its published fine schedule lists $54 for "not having equipment to remove feces" under SMC 9.25.082(C). With six dogs and an empty pocket, you are in violation before anyone squats.

Some places also cap the pack. At Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the National Park Service requires a commercial permit to walk 4 to 6 dogs at a time, and no one may walk more than 6. The math at walker volume

Assume one pickup per dog per walk, plus a spare for every five dogs, over 22 weekdays a month.

The group walk problem

Dogs on a group walk have a talent for going at the same time. Three things help.

• Pre-pull your bags. Tear off three or four before you set out and keep them loose in an easy pocket. Nobody finds a perforation with five leashes in one hand.
• Have a place for the first bag. A hook on the dispenser holds one used bag, maybe two. Past that, carry a dedicated sack or a small lidded bucket.
• Route past bins. In New York City, the Sanitation Department says a tied bag of dog waste can go in a public litter basket. Check your own city before you rely on that.

You see the poop, the owner does not

This is the part clients value most and rarely think to ask for. You are the one looking at their dog's poop five days a week. If it changes, tell them. VCA Animal Hospitals says a dog with severe, bloody diarrhea should get medical attention as soon as possible, and that loose stools lasting more than two days mean a call to the vet.

Prompt pickup also protects the rest of your group. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that intestinal parasites like roundworms and hookworms lay eggs that pass in stool and infect other dogs through contaminated soil and paws.

And ask each client where used bags should go. Some want them in the outside bin. Nobody wants one discovered in the kitchen trash on a hot afternoon.
